At the beginning of the First World War, Underground posters took on a propaganda function in addition to their publicity role. This created some rather mixed messages. Travel posters like this still promoted pleasure trips as if nothing had changed. They were often displayed alongside sombre army recruitment posters. Later fuel shortages led to cut-backs in leisure travel.
