High quality reprint of an iconic Soviet propaganda poster from the mid-1920s, created as part of the USSR’s massive anti-illiteracy campaign known as Likbez (short for “likvidatsiya bezgramotnosti,” meaning “elimination of illiteracy”). After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, the new Soviet government faced enormous illiteracy rates, especially among peasants and women. Lenin considered literacy essential for building a socialist state, and in 1919 the government launched a nationwide literacy campaign.

About the artist:
Nikolai Prusakov(1900–1952) was a Russian poster and stage designer.
His work is kept in the Museaum of modern artthe National library of Russia, The university of Michigan Museum of Art, and the Merrill C Berman Collection.
