Meinert was bornRudolf BürsteininVienna, but worked for most of his career in theGerman film industry. He became well-established as the producer/director ofsilentcrime films. In the immediate post-First World Warperiod, Meinert was head of production at the German studioDeclaafter his own production unitMeinert-Filmwas taken over by the larger outfit. Meinert, rather thanErich Pommer, is sometimes credited as the producer behind Decla's revolutionaryThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari(1920).[1]Following theNazitakeover of power in Germany, Meinert, who wasJewish, went into exile in theNetherlands, however he returned to Austria. He moved to France in 1937 and lived there until he was caught, sent toDrancy internment campand transported toMajdanek concentration campon 6 March 1943, where he was murdered.[2][
