Norman Rockwell’s iconic Rosie the Riveter painting, which appeared on the May 29, 1943, cover of The Saturday Evening Post, was created to celebrate the millions of American women who stepped into manufacturing and industrial roles to support the World War II home front.
The image of Rosie was heavily inspired by Michelangelo's Prophet Isaiah on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, giving her a muscular, heroic, and almost god-like stature.
