A reproduction of a Renaissance philosophical and mystical diagram, probably dating from the late 16th or early 17th century.

Christian theology (the Trinity and God shown at the top as Deus), Aristotelian psychology (the senses and faculties of the mind). Medieval cosmology (the concentric celestial spheres) and Hermetic/alchemical philosophy, where the human being is viewed as a microcosm—a reflection of the universe.

The figure's head is divided into different mental faculties:

  • Animus Imaginabilis – the imaginative mind.
  • Animus Sensibilis – the sensory mind.
  • Auditus – hearing.
  • Other senses such as vision, smell, taste and touch are connected to different regions.

Although we are not sure who the original artist was, the engraving is very much in the style of scholars such as Robert Fludd or Heinrich Khunrat.
